Counterattack

A quick attacking move that exploits the space left by an opposition team that has committed players forward.

A counterattack — often called a 'counter' — is a rapid transition from defense to attack. When the opposing team loses possession after pushing forward, the defending team immediately launches a fast, direct attack into the space behind the opposition's defensive line. When it works, a counterattack is devastating.

How a Counter Works

Counterattacks rely on speed and space. The moment possession is won — through a tackle, an interception, or a goalkeeper's catch — the team launches forward immediately with minimal passes. Fast wingers and forwards sprint into the channels behind defenders who have pushed up the pitch. The goal is to attack before the opposition can recover their defensive shape.

Teams That Excel at Counters

Teams that sit deep defensively and counter quickly are called 'counter-attacking teams.' Famous counter-attacking sides include the José Mourinho era Inter Milan (who won the 2010 Champions League on the counter), Diego Simeone's Atlético Madrid, and the German national team in their pomp (2014 World Cup). Having extreme pace in forward positions — like Mbappé for France — is the ultimate counter-attacking weapon.

Counter vs Possession

The counter-attack style is the tactical opposite of possession-based soccer. A possession team tries to build slowly through controlled passing. A counter-attacking team deliberately invites pressure, knowing they can hurt their opponent when possession turns over. At the World Cup, smaller nations frequently set up to counter-attack against more talented opposition — it is often the most effective path to a famous upset.

⚽ At WC26

At WC26, counterattacking tactics will be prevalent in the group stage as smaller nations face elite opposition. The co-host nations — especially the USA, with their physically athletic, tactically flexible squad — have the personnel to execute effective counterattacks against higher-ranked opponents.
