False 9

A striker who drops deep into midfield to receive the ball instead of staying forward as a traditional center-forward.

A false 9 is a center-forward who does not stay up front. Instead of holding a position near the opposing goal, the false 9 drops deep into midfield to receive passes and link play, while teammates — typically attacking midfielders — make runs beyond them into the space vacated. It is a tactical idea that became mainstream in the early 2010s, largely due to Lionel Messi's performances for Barcelona.

Why It Works

A traditional center-forward pulls central defenders high up the pitch. When the false 9 drops deep instead, defenders face a choice: follow the attacker deep (and leave a hole behind them) or hold their line (and allow the false 9 to receive the ball with time and space in midfield). Either option creates danger. Attacking midfielders exploit the space left by defenders who follow the false 9's movement.

Famous False 9s

Lionel Messi played the false 9 role in Pep Guardiola's Barcelona and catalyzed Barcelona's best-ever run. Roberto Firmino was the false 9 in Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool. Francesco Totti and Thomas Müller have also played variations of the role. The tactic requires a forward who is as comfortable in midfield as in the penalty area — technically excellent but selfless.

When It Does Not Work

The false 9 is most effective against teams that play a high defensive line and use man-marking. Against teams that hold a deep defensive block and track runners effectively, the space the false 9 tries to exploit does not exist. Many teams have abandoned the pure false 9 in favor of hybrids — attackers who can switch between roles within a match.
