Group Stage

The opening phase of the World Cup where teams are divided into groups and play round-robin matches to determine who advances.

The group stage is the first phase of the World Cup. Teams are divided into groups and each team plays every other team in their group once. At the end, the top finishers in each group advance to the knockout rounds.

How It Works at WC26

The 2026 World Cup features 48 teams split into 12 groups of 4. Each team plays three group stage matches. The top two teams in each group advance automatically (24 teams). The 8 best third-place finishers from all 12 groups also advance. That creates 32 teams entering the knockout rounds — the same number that competed in the entire previous 32-team World Cup format.

How Teams Are Ranked in a Group

Group rankings are determined first by points (3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss). If teams are level on points, goal difference is used (goals scored minus goals conceded). If still level, the number of goals scored is used. After that, the tiebreaker is the head-to-head result between the teams that are tied. In rare cases, a drawing of lots may be used.

The Third-Place System

Qualifying as one of the 8 best third-place teams is the key innovation of the WC26 format. All 12 third-place teams are ranked together by points, then goal difference, then goals scored. The top 8 advance. This means a third-place team with 4 points (a win and a draw) has an excellent chance of progressing, but 3 points may not be enough if other groups produce stronger third-place finishers.

⚽ At WC26

The WC26 group stage runs from June 11 to July 2, with 72 matches across 23 matchdays. The expanded format means more matches, more opportunities for upsets, and greater uncertainty over which third-place teams advance.
