Round of 32

The new first knockout round at the 2026 World Cup, where 32 teams compete and 16 advance.

The Round of 32 is a new addition to the World Cup format introduced for 2026. It is the first round of the knockout phase, where all 32 teams that qualify from the group stage play single-elimination matches. Sixteen teams advance; sixteen go home.

Why It Was Added

The expansion from 32 to 48 teams required a new knockout round. With 32 teams qualifying from the group stage (24 group winners and runners-up plus 8 best third-place teams), the tournament needed an extra elimination round before the traditional Round of 16. The Round of 32 essentially serves the role that the old Round of 16 did in the 32-team format.

What It Means for Teams

In the old format, finishing third in a group meant going home. Now, a strong third-place finish keeps you in the tournament — but you still face a Round of 32 match against a group winner or runner-up. Third-place teams are seeded against group winners in the bracket, meaning they face tougher opposition in the Round of 32.

More Matches, More Chances

For fans, the Round of 32 means eight additional matches compared to the old format — eight more opportunities for upsets, drama, and the moment a nation's World Cup story begins or ends. For smaller nations qualifying for their first World Cup, the Round of 32 gives them one more match on the biggest stage before potentially facing an elite opponent.
